Cycling on Thanh Da island

I didn’t know there was an island in Ho Chi Minh City.  But there is, and it’s only a few minutes by cab from district 1 or 2!  We squeezed two bicycles in the back of a cab (I love the can-do attitude of Vietnamese people) and got out at the Saigon Domaine apartments.  The traffic was sparse (and I get the feeling it would be even outside of Tet holidays) and the roads are reasonably paved and really flat, so you don’t even need a bike with gears.  A really lovely escape from the craziness of HCMC.

A few fun finds were:

A random ferry adventure – we caught it across the river and back again, to where we have no idea, but it was kind of cool.  Although the handing out of flotation devices to each passenger at the start of the trip didn’t inspire much confidence in the sea-worthiness of the vessel…

Back streets that wind through rice fields, water-ways and shady jungle – it looks and feels like the Mekong Delta

‘Resorts’ – two government-run places with grass, lotus ponds, swimming pool, river-side restaurants.  You know, the usual.  We stopped at one for a soda lime, it was lovely sitting by the river.
